Skeptics have labeled NDEs as subjective, since the account is based on one person’s experience. SDEs, on the other hand, are objective, since more than one person is involved during the experience. Most cases of SDEs involve bystanders observing the experience of a dying person transitioning to the Other Side. But what about several people who transition to the Other Side simultaneously and return to tell of their shared death experience?

One of the most compelling examples of this type of SDE occurred in 1989. It involved a crew of firefighters known as “Hotshots.” When it comes to firefighters, Hotshots are the equivalent of Special Forces. These elite teams consist of twenty to twenty-two highly trained personnel, who are deployed to the largest, most dangerous, and most difficult fires around the globe.

In 1996 famed NDE researcher Arvin Gibson interviewed Hotshot John Hernandez about the incident. Hernandez’s Hotshots unit was attempting to contain a fire in treacherous mountain terrain. Firefighting is a dangerous occupation under any circumstances, but mountain weather is highly volatile and subject to unpredictable and rapid changes. To further complicate matters, the Hotshots were weighed down by nearly sixty pounds of protective gear and equipment.

Everything was going according to procedure until the wind intensified and sharply changed direction. A deafening blast sent a shock wave across the mountain as trees engulfed by the flames exploded. Fueled by wood and wind, the roaring fire raced toward the Hotshots at tremendous speed, incinerating everything in its path. They were trapped.

The Hotshots’ highly developed sense of situational awareness kicked in. With only seconds to react or die, each Hotshot instantly hit the ground facedown, pulling protective gear over their bodies as the flames engulfed them. Hernandez knew he was suffocating as the fire sucked all the oxygen from the air.

“This is it. I am going to die,” flooded Hernandez’s head. Then he realized he was floating above the fire, watching his body lying on the ground. He immediately saw the spirits of his fellow Hotshots also hovering above the fire with him. They could see one another!

Hernandez noticed something amazing about his teammate Jose, who had been born with a deformed foot. “Look, Jose, your foot is straight!” he exclaimed, realizing that his friend was free of his physical disability and that he’d just communicated that fact to Jose and his fellow Hotshots telepathically.

Upon the awareness he was somehow interconnected with the other Hotshots, Hernandez was instantly transported into another realm. “The light — the fantastic light. It was brighter than the sun shining on a field of snow. Yet I could look at it, and it didn’t hurt my eyes.”

An all-encompassing sensation of peace and serenity flowed through Hernandez as a collective of spirits emerged from the Light and approached him. He saw his great-grandfather at the head of several other spirits, whom he recognized as deceased relatives.

Hernandez described his experience to NDE researcher Arvin Gibson: “When I was there, everything was so perfect, and my spirit body, it … it was so free.
